Green cleaning is not that hard. Reading labels is the most important part. The claims of "Green Product", Plant Based", and "Contains no bleach or phosphorous" are designed to make you feel more comfortable using these products but what do these terms really mean? The phosphate ban on cleaning chemicals went into effect over two years ago yet some companies still talk about how they are working towards a healthy world. Some other terms you might find on labels are:"wetting agent", "surfactant", "emusifier" and "non-ionic surfactant".
These terms are vague but are protected by the trade secret laws. If a company does not disclose its ingredients ask yourself "what are they hiding?" I've found a web page that may help. Here's a list a list of chemicals and terms to avoid on this page entitled, Hazardous Cleaners. Make sure your green cleaning service actually knows about this.
